Booking.com (USA), Inc, one of the support companies in the United States, is seeking a full time Senior Tax Consultant based in our New York City Office. 

This role will have a main focus on supporting the Tax Team in relation to various US tax matters (in particular in the field of US sales tax and hotel occupancy tax) from a data, technology and operational/process perspective. 

 

The tax department currently consists of around 40+ persons, which are working in either one of the two business focused verticals (Accommodations BU and Trips BU) or one of the tax horizontals (TP; VAT; Governance, Compliance & Controversy and Data & Technology Strategy). The tax department is part of Finance (approx. 1,000 professionals, mostly based in Amsterdam).

 

The role involves close interaction with our entire tax team, our parent company (Booking Holdings Inc based in Norwalk, Connecticut), our sister brands, our international offices, business managers, Fintech / Product teams and other finance colleagues. 

 

What You'll Be Doing:

 

We are looking for someone to join our team and support the transformation of our tax operations through technology and process optimization. This role focuses on collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement and maintain efficient tax technology solutions, ensuring compliance with US tax regulations. The ideal candidate has experience with tax technology tools, tax processes, and data management and is eager to grow in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Tax Technology Initiatives & Data Management:

    • Assist in implementing and maintaining tax technology solutions such as SAP/S4, tax engine, and other systems.

    • Assist in preparing documentation and reports related to tax system changes and enhancements.

    • Support data analysis efforts to ensure tax data accuracy and reliability in reporting.

  • Process Analysis & Improvement:

    • Review existing tax processes, implementing controls and identify areas for efficiency gains and improvements.

    • Ensure US tax implications are taken into account for new processes, products and/or business models. 

    • Develop recommendations for streamlining tax workflows using technology and data analytics.

  • Compliance & Risk Management:

    • Stay informed on US tax law changes and their impact on tax systems and processes. In this respect, you may also need to work with our Public Affairs team on upcoming regulations.

    • Ensure compliance with applicable tax regulations through regular testing and post-implementation reviews of tax tools.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:

    • Communicate tax data & technology requirements and updates to non-tax stakeholders. 

    • Work closely with the project management team of DTS or other departments to track progress and meet key milestones on projects.

What You'll Bring

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or related field - Master’s degree preferred; advanced degree or certification (e.g., CPA, CMI) is a plus.

  • Experience:

    • 3-5 years of experience in tax technology and US tax advisory, tax compliance, tax accounting.

    • Experience with the implementation, UAT and/or maintenance of the tax set-up in ERP systems such as SAP/S4, tax codes, tax engine e.g. Avalara, Vertex, or Thomson Reuters.

    • Experience with other tools and technology such as AI, workflow tools (e.g. Jira, Asana), drawing tools (Lucidchart, Miro), data management, analysis and/or cleansing tools (Tableau Prep, Alteryx, SAC).

  • Skills & Competencies:

    • You will collaborate with teams across the business, Fintech / Product and Finance so stakeholder management and influencing skills are key. 

    • Able to work under pressure and to strict deadlines, and comfortable working in a fast turnaround environment and managing multiple priorities simultaneously;

    • Strategic thinker and self-starter, who works effectively with minimum direction, taking ownership of tasks and responsibilities, not afraid to challenge the status quo;

  • Knowledge Base:

    • Understanding of US federal, state and local tax regulations, including indirect taxes like sales tax and preferably hotel occupancy taxes. US income tax experience is preferred.

    • Up to date awareness of tax technology trends and solutions in the market.

    • Preferably familiar with digital platform challenges, business models, and taxes such as marketplace facilitator rules.
